"A World on Fire: As Told by Nikki and Jimmy," a musical drama reimagining the 1971 televised conversation between James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni.
Key aspects of the play include:
Runtime: Approximately 90 minutes.
Style: Modern theater blending passionate dialogue, soulful songs, and a chorus inspired by jazz, gospel, and classical traditions.
Themes: Race, love, resilience, identity, intergenerational struggle, and the enduring power of truth. It also explores love as a radical act of survival and defiance, and the tension between societal expectations and personal truth.
Plot: Through three acts, Baldwin and Giovanni discuss their perspectives on love, pain, and responsibility amidst systemic racism. Baldwin questions love's survival, while Giovanni emphasizes its necessity for Black liberation. They confront vulnerabilities, and ultimately reconcile, finding common ground and hope for future generations.
Musical Elements: The score fuses gospel, R&B, and jazz, reflecting the cultural and intellectual heritage of Baldwin and Giovanni.
